This panel session would look at the importance of building trust with users and the general public through the production of relevant and timely statistics. Too often a complaint from members of the public is that they ‘cannot see themselves’ in the statistics and often they feel that the statistics don’t represent their socioeconomic community, this can lead to a distrust of the statistics. The UK has recently sought to address this challenge through its Inclusive Data Task Force, which aims to improve the quality of data about minorities and hard to reach groups; it has also worked with food poverty campaigners to produce prices indexes that focus on the goods and services people with lower income purchase in order to produce a prices index relevant to this group.
