Electronic Assessment to Master Data Skills
Conference
Category: International Association for Statistical Education (IASE)
Proposal Description
This session focuses on the development and utilisation of electronic assessment tools to support student mastery of data skills in a variety of contexts. It will be split into two components, with the first hour dedicated to talks and the remaining 40 minutes for a discussion panel. Opportunities for audience participation will be integrated in the session.
David Stern will chair the session. As an ISI council member, a member of the advisory board of STACK, and a former IASE vice president, David brings personal experience to this topic that can frame its importance within a broader perspective.
There are four confirmed speakers for the first hour of the session:
- Lily Clements who has used electronic assessment in a wide variety of courses which build data skills, varying from courses in responsible AI, to problem solving, and even introductory courses. She is particularly interested in the potential of mastery quizzes to support both conceptual understanding and practical skills.
-Sal Mercuri who has led recent STACK's development specifically for statistics and data questions. He will present on how STACK is now starting to include data considerations in its design and what the opportunities are for question authors.
-Annette Okoth has driven the institutional integration of electronic assessment for statistics courses at her university in Kenya. She will present on the impacts observed on student learning and staff appreciation of this initiative.
-Oksana Labanova, Natalya Maksimova and Elena Safiulina have been innovating by integrating STACK into their statistics teaching in Estonia. They will be presenting on their innovation and findings.
The talks will be followed by a panel discussion where members of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) community will comment on broader implications of electronic assessment for the statistics education community. The panellists are:
-Ayse Biglin, former president of IASE.
-Saleha Habibullah, former vice president of IASE.
-James Kaleli Musyoka, former vice president of IASE.
They will bring perspectives from their various contexts and comment on how these electronic assessment approaches relate to broader trends in statistical education.
Through this session, participants can engage with the multifaceted dimensions of electronic assessment for data skills, while also considering its broader implications for the field of education. Technologies presented are open source and presenters content is based on open educational resources so can be freely shared. Interested audience members will be encouraged to use the resources in their own context as part of an effort to learn together at scale through open collaborative research.
