    Proposal Description

    Session proposed by Eurostat.

    Official statistics have an important responsibility to support all groups of data users and ensure that they can make informed decisions based on data. These include non-expert users of statistics as well as people who are afraid of statistics or have limited access to statistical information. Making official statistics easier to grasp for non-expert users of statistics is one of the most significant challenges in statistical communication and is a key element for improving statistical literacy in society.

    This section will explore the organisations’ strategies and experiences in communicating statistics to non-advanced users of statistics. Potential topics may include:

    • Identify the information needs of non-expert users of statistics;

    • Products and resources for communicating statistics to non-specialist audiences, including the use of interactive tools using data visualisations and storytelling;

    • Case studies of dissemination strategies that have proven successful;

    • Useful tools to identify needs of non-expert users of statistics and measure the success of statistical literacy products, for example through usability testing, and how they have impacted the dissemination strategy;

    • Partnerships in communication of statistics to bolster statistical literacy.
