Level of instruction: Intermediate
1-Day course
Instructors: Rens van de Schoot & Jelle Teijema
Join us for a workshop on how artificial intelligence can assist with systematic literature screening. We'll introduce ASReview (www.asreview.ai), an open-source software that accelerates the process of screening large numbers of documents using AI models. With this tool, you can not only create a systematic overview of relevant literature, but you can also test how different models perform on labeled data—either using available benchmark datasets or your own. Try out existing built-in models (including transformer models), add any model via HuggingFace, or even test a model you've created yourself.
We will also introduce and explore different performance metrics and visualizations to help you evaluate and understand how the models are performing. These tools will allow you to interpret results effectively and make informed decisions about which models and strategies work best for your specific needs. We'll also introduce ASReview Makita, a tool that allows you to design studies and test performance on a larger scale. ASReview Makita lets you run multiple simulation studies in parallel—even using a Kubernetes cluster. After the introduction and software demonstration, we'll have a discussion about AI applications, concerns about transparency, ethical considerations, and the importance of sharing data for reproducible research.
The workshop is led by Rens van de Schoot, professor of Collaborative AI at Utrecht University and head of the AI Aided Knowledge Discovery Lab, and Jelle Teijema, an AI and Data Science researcher at the same lab. This event is for anyone interested in understanding fair AI practices and engaging in discussions about their implementation.
Prof. Dr. Rens van de Schoot is a full professor of Collaborative Methods in AI and Data Science at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He serves as the director of the AI Lab on AI-aided Knowledge Discovery and is the coordinator of the open-source ASReview project (AI-aided Systematic Reviewing). He is the Chair of the Special Interest Group on ‘Active Learning’, part of the university-wide focus areas Applied Data Science and Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
Jelle Teijema is an applied data scientist and PhD candidate at Utrecht University, specializing in open science infrastructures and (generative) AI. He received the notable Hofvijverkring Fellowship Grant and contributes to projects with wide-ranging impact, such as ASReview.
This workshop is designed for researchers, data scientists, academics, and professionals interested in comparing AI models for AI-aided literature screening. If you're interested in leveraging AI to enhance your research processes, or if you want to understand fair AI practices and engage in discussions about their implementation, this event is for you. Whether you're new to AI-aided screening applications or looking to deepen your existing knowledge, you'll find valuable insights and practical tools here.
For the hands-on portion of the workshop, bringing a laptop will allow you to follow along with the software demonstrations. Although no Python knowledge is required, it needs to be installed at your laptop.
It also helps if you already install via pip install :
