About the Short Course: 2 Days Course

Increase the flow of “job ready” Data Science graduates into the workplace, i.e. train students that are able to “think with data”, that know how to turn masses of data (unstructured) into actions, to enable them to “hit the ground running” when entering the business world after graduation.

Day 1
Laying a strong foundation
Projects/Programs to advocate for school leavers to have an appreciation for the advantage of embarking on studies in Statistics and Data Science at tertiary level.

Day 2
Linking with Business and Industry, to train students through industry-infused academic programs, to build relevant capacity for the workplace, in a manner that is coupled with laying the foundation for collaborative research between workplace and tertiary institution.

Who is this course for?

Academic Statisticians of all ages, but this would particularly be advantageous to young academic statisticians in a developing country.
 
Level Of Instruction: Intermediate

Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop a practical hands-on approach to problem solving, that mirrors the day-to-day work of data analyst/scientist.
  2. Derive and effectively communicate actionable insights from a vast quantity and variety of data, by having the ability to solve problems, through the use of statistical as well as machine learning packages

 

Course Materials

From very basic software aimed at school level (SAS Data Fly, CODAP), to more sophisticated software packages like SAS VIYA.

Delivery Structure

There will be various Instructional Talks, followed by Demonstrations.

About the instructor: Delia North

Prof North is an elected member of the ISI, a past vice-president of the IASE and has chaired the South African Statistical Association Education Committee for 17 years. She is an academic Statistician, with 13 years’ experience as Head of School and has more than 30 years’ experience as an academic statistician. She is passionate about building capacity in Statistics at all levels and has lead a number of local and national projects and awards in this regard.

About the instructor: Prof Temesgen Zewotir

Prof Zewotir is an outstanding academic statistician, the most prolific researcher of 2021 at his academic institution across all disciplines, and has a long history of excellence ito curriculum design, research output and postgraduate student throughput. He is an elected member of the ISI and an advisory board member for the African Centre of Excellence in Data Science
