Abstract
In an increasingly data-driven world, statistical literacy is becoming essential across disciplines. However, teaching statistics to non-statistics majors, especially within African universities, poses unique challenges while also offering significant opportunities for educational innovation. This presentation explores the pedagogical, institutional, and contextual hurdles encountered when introducing statistics to students from diverse academic backgrounds, such as business, social sciences, and the humanities.
Key challenges include the lack of prior mathematical training, differing levels of student motivation, and the limited availability of relevant and culturally contextualised examples that can make statistical concepts more accessible. Additionally, there is often a misalignment between the statistical tools taught and the practical applications most beneficial to non-statistics majors in their respective fields.
Despite these challenges, the integration of statistics in non-statistical disciplines presents great opportunities. With the advent of technology, innovative teaching approaches—such as data visualisation, real-world problem-solving projects, and the use of software tools—have the potential to engage students more effectively. Furthermore, contextualising statistics within local, African contexts can enhance learning and relevance, fostering students’ critical thinking and data literacy.
This presentation will discuss best practices in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and the importance of collaboration between statisticians and professionals in other disciplines. It will also highlight success stories from African universities, showcasing how these institutions are reshaping statistical education to equip students with essential skills for their respective fields. Ultimately, this session aims to spark dialogue on how educators can bridge the gap between statistical theory and practical application for non-specialist students, making statistical education more inclusive and impactful.
