Abstract
Metaheuristics is used widely in computer science and engineering because of its documented ability to solve or approximately solve high-dimensional or complex optimization problems with minimal assumptions. Recently, the field of optimal experimental designs has benefitted from use of metaheuristics. This talk first gives an overview of metaheuristics, reviews some of its recent applications to find complicated optimal design for the healthsciences and new applications in the construction of multi-stage phase I/II clinical trials for oncology. If time permits, we provide live demonstratations how metaheuristics can find a variety of such designs efficiently.
