Abstract

The advent of digitalisation and technological innovation presents an important opportunity for the evolution of official statistics in Africa. This paper explores the profound implications of these advancements on national statistical systems across the continent, emphasising how emerging technologies—such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and mobile platforms—are revolutionising data collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination. The paper critically examines the potential of these technologies to enhance the accuracy, timeliness, and granularity of statistical data, which are essential for informed policy-making and socio-economic development.
In addition to exploring opportunities, the paper addresses the significant challenges that accompany this digital transformation, including issues of data privacy, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure disparities, and the urgent need for capacity building within national statistical offices (NSOs). It also considers the implications of technological inequality and disparity between and within countries, which can exacerbate existing data gaps and hinder regional integration efforts.
Through a series of case studies, best practices, and policy recommendations, the paper provides a comprehensive framework for African NSOs to strategically integrate technology into their operations. It asserts that a coordinated approach, involving partnerships between governments, the private sector, and international organizations, is essential for creating resilient, inclusive, and responsive statistical systems. The paper suggests that leveraging digital and technological advancements is not just an option but a necessity for advancing official statistics in Africa, enabling the continent to meet its development goals and participate fully in the global data ecosystem.
