Abstract

This presentation will present statistical literacy through two lenses.

The first lens is through the ISI Public Voice Consortium. Established in the past two years, the Public Voice Consortium enables all members of the ISI to participate in activities that aim to increase the visibility and influence of statisticians in society and promote the value of statistics to the wider community. These activities include organising and contributing to a community blog, "Statisticians React to the News", creating Wikipedia pages for prominent ISI members, identifying and adding to suitable YouTube videos that enhance statistical literacy, and regional webinars that aim to amplify the global voice of statisticians.

Progress on this work can be viewed at : https://isi-web.org/public-voice
Please get in touch if you are interested in joining the Consortium!

The second lens is through collaborative work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Queensland, Australia. Two projects, joint with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) and the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) have aimed to co-design digital and data strategies that will elevate data literacy and statistical literacy within the organisations and among their clients. A further project with ATSICHS aims to build on their strategy, to "increase agency and hope" among Indigenous people by enhancing their ability to use data to further their motto: "our community - our future - our way".

Progress on this work is summarised in the paper by Cook et al. (2024), Empowering communities through data literacy: a qualitative study exploring Indigenous Australian perceptions, engagement and understanding of data. https://openjournals.uwaterloo.ca/index.php/JoCI/article/view/5707

Both components of work are joint with teams of people who will be acknowledged in the presentation.
