Abstract

Coding to produce programs to conduct a statistical analysis or produce a visualization as part of a data analysis is a foundational skill for statisticians and data scientists. Summarizing and communicating the results of analysis to technical and non-technical audiences is another skill valued in successful professionals. These skills are taught in classes, developed in practice and nurtured over a career. Changes in the education of the next generation of statisticians and data scientists along with changes in educators to implement these changes are needed to take advantage of generative AI tools, particularly large language models. Discussion of such changes will be a focus on remarks in this panel.
