Abstract
The European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) is an initiative by the European Statistical System
Committee and the European System of Central Banks to promote cooperation between statistics
producers and universities with the aim of offering content in official statistics as part of master’s
programmes and building a European community in this field.
EMOS is implemented as a quality label awarded to master’s programmes that cover courses on the
system of official statistics, production models and methods, themes in official statistics, statistical
methods and dissemination (EMOS learning outcomes). Students achieve the learning outcomes by
completing the courses, an internship and a master’s thesis on a topic relevant to official statistics,
and engaging in other learning experiences. This presentation will give an overview of the tools that
are employed by individual master’s programmes and their partners in organisations producing
official statistics, as well as those organised centrally by Eurostat, to advance postgraduate education
in official statistics and produce skilled graduates in the field.
