Abstract
Teaching data science in schools offers an important pathway for developing civic engagement, equipping students with the skills to interpret and act on societal issues through data. However, successfully integrating data science into school-level education requires equipping teachers with the required knowledge skills and resources to bring data science in to the classroom. The aim of the Erasmus+ project (DataScEd4CiEn) is to introduce data science as a powerful tool for addressing real-world issues related to civic engagement and social justice.
One challenge of introducing data science in schools lies in preparing teachers, many of whom may not have a background in data science, to feel confident and competent in teaching the subject. The presentation is outline the conceptual framework underpinning the Erasmus+ project, reveal the core data science concepts addressed and developed alongside approaches used to make these ideas accessible to young students. It will outline the considerations of the professional development programs and emphases on both the technical knowledge, pedagogical strategies necessary to simplify complex data science topics and hands-on learning experiences that build teachers’ confidence in using data tools, software, and platforms appropriate for middle school learners.
Insights will be shared in to how educators can frame data science projects around local or global civic challenges—such as environmental sustainability, public health, or social equity – and in turn help students understand how data connects to their lives and communities.
