Abstract
South Africa is developing a comprehensive multi-year update and implementation roadmap to align its macroeconomic statistics compilation framework with the guidance provided in the revised System of National Accounts (SNA) and Balance of Payments and International Investment Position (BoP) manuals which are scheduled for release in 2025. These envisaged updates will have implications across all macroeconomic statistical domains and especially for South Africa’s Integrated Economic Accounts (IEA) framework, with the key focus on the enhancement of the accuracy, relevance, and comparability of South Africa’s macroeconomic statistics. This implementation roadmap outlines the strategic approach for integrating the updated international standards and best practices into the national statistical framework. Key objectives include aligning with updated international statistical guidelines, improving data sourcing and statistics compilation methodologies, and refining the macroeconomic statistical offering to better reflect the dynamic South African economy. The implementation roadmap emphasizes stakeholder engagement, capacity assessment and building, knowledge transfer and the adoption of modern technologies to support the transition and ensure the robustness of the updated system. Through this initiative, South Africa aims to strengthen its macroeconomic analysis capabilities, support informed policymaking, and enhance its comparability within the global economic eco system.
