Abstract

This text is an abstract, part of the IPS Proposal "Advancing Sustainable Statistics Education in Developing Countries: Innovations, Challenges, and Opportunities". This part of the IPS specifically addresses products and processes developed to promote Statistical Education in Brazil. These are social and educational technologies developed at the Innovation Center for Statistical Education - ICE, at the Federal University of Rio Grande - FURG. Despite all the difficulties of a developing country in promoting Statistical Literacy, in the extreme southern coast of Brazil it was possible to create a Center for the development of research and actions in favor of Statistical Education - the ICE. This Center is based at the southernmost federal university in Brazil - FURG. The International Interdisciplinary Research Group in Statistical Education - GIIPEE is based at ICE. For pilot experiments of innovative products and processes, the Center and Group have physical spaces such as the Statistics Learning Room - SalAEst, a space for interactive and collaborative classes, with technologies, for 60 undergraduate students simultaneously. ICE also has a physical space - Laboratory of Cognitive Studies and Technologies in Statistical Education - LabEst, physical space of GIIPEE, where researchers and postgraduate students develop investigations and social and educational technologies. One of these social and educational technologies created was the Statistical Multimedia Literacy Program - LeME. This program was created 15 years ago and promotes statistical literacy among 300 young people in social, economic and environmental vulnerability each year. LeME received the Best Cooperative Project Award from the International Association for Statistical Education - IASE in 2019, in Malaysia. Constantly at ICE, GIIPEE creates products and processes to promote Statistical Literacy, such as manipulable or digital materials, as well as pedagogical strategies and models guiding teaching practices. Two relevant ICE products are MOSAICO and ATELIE. MOSAICO, a collaborative group for teacher development, is responsible for preparing teachers to promote statistical literacy. ATELIE, a technological support for playful and interactive statistics education, has an Instagram channel that disseminates the products and processes developed at ICE. In this IPC we will have the opportunity to specifically present what is developed at ICE - a Center for Innovation in Statistical Education developed and recognized worldwide in the construction of scientific knowledge in the area of Statistical Education, even though based in a developing country.
