Abstract
In this talk, speakers from the US Census Bureau Randall Kekoa Akee, National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations and Shadana Sultan, Tribal Relations Specialist will consider how the construct(s) of Indigenous Data Sovereignty across North America (US, Mexico, Canada) map to ethical practice of statistics and data science in industry. They will discuss how various data collection activities may affect the proprietary interests of Indigenous Peoples. In particular, they will focus on how economic and business surveys may affect tribal nations’ and other Indigenous Peoples’ business and non-profit organizations. In some cases, these data are publicly available but not necessarily authorized for release by the tribal nation or Indigenous communities. They will discuss how these may potentially have adverse effects on the business establishments and/or non-profit organizations. Finally, they will discuss how the non-market based activities and other natural resource or ecosystem services play a role in this discuss as well. These other activities may not be adequately measured but that might be desirable; the circumstances may differ across tribal nations and Indigenous communities depending upon the degree of cooperation and oversight.
