Abstract
This work highlights the calculation of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) for the agricultural sector performed by the European Commission (EU methodology) Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development at Member State level – the context indicator C.27. More specifically, this assessment draws a methodological comparison between the TFP calculation of the European Commission and the methodology adopted (in 2023) by the international productivity branch of the Economic Research Service at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA-ERS) for its own TFP calculation (based on FAOSTAT data).
Additionally, this analysis goes further to propose enhancements to the current methodology for calculating the EU's Total Factor Productivity by exploring alternative datasets accessible through Eurostat or other sources. Lastly, this document aims to offer preliminary suggestions for refining conventional TFP calculations in line with the guidance provided by the OECD Network Group on environmentally-adjusted total factor productivity, specifically focusing on the integration of environmental indicators into a classical economic productivity measurement framework.
