Abstract
Smart surveys require participants to engage in more activities compared to regular surveys that rely on self-report only. Smart surveys might require respondents to install an app, provide consent for the passive collection of data via sensors, and/or involve active tasks such as taking pictures of shopping receipts, food, surroundings, etc. These additional tasks increase the burden both in terms of having to engage in more activities and in terms of potential privacy invasion. In this presentation, we will discuss the results from previous research as well as new experimental evidence collected in the SSI project on the influence of various design factors (e.g., appeal in the recruitment letter, use of interviewers, incentive strategy) on the participation decision in smart surveys.
