Abstract
The Florence Nightingale Day (FN Day) for Statistics and Data Science was launched in 2018 with the support of multiple international statistical organizations, including the Caucus for Women in Statistics and the American Statistical Association. Through honoring Nightingale’s legacy as a pioneer in data visualization, the goal of the FN Day is to inspire a diverse group of high school students, especially girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue education opportunities in statistics and data science and to become future leaders in these fields. Over the past seven years, FN Day has evolved into a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization; its mission is to engage students, promote career opportunities in statistics and data science, and celebrate the contributions of women to these fields. FN Day has now been hosted as a one-day event at numerous sites in the United States and Canada. In response to the lack of international programs and resources targeted at introducing statistics as a field of study and career path, I will highlight the key features of FN Day and discuss strategies for broadening its scope to the global stage. By raising awareness and hosting more events across the world, we endeavor to encourage young women and other underrepresented individuals to explore educational and career opportunities in statistics and other data-related fields.
