Abstract

The consequences of digitalization for economic progress are of crucial social importance. The imperatives of digitalization work through the digital competencies of the workforce. This can be observed in the rapidly changing labor market landscape. For a successful digital economy, it is crucial to cultivate new knowledge related to digital technologies and promote the application of specialized digital skills. One of our main research interests is to understand how digital competencies influence the workforce and its productivity.

Motivated by this need, we conduct a study to assess the availability of digital skills in the Dutch labor market. This initiative started with an exploration of the link between digital skills and professions. We studied two skill ontologies: the Dutch version of digital skills from ESCO and CompetentNL. For the second resource, we have compiled a list of digital skills. For the digital skills in both ontologies, we defined a three-level classification, depending on the complexity of the digital skill. Based on this classification we propose a digital scoring measure for occupations. Efforts then focused on quantifying the workforce associated with digitally skilled occupations and analyzing the associated compensation structures. Various tables can be created, such as the number of professionals, salary or digital skills that companies or sectors have.
