Abstract

The FGV IBRE – Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getulio Vargas Foundation – is a center of excellence in research, analysis, and production of economic statistics. With a physical presence in 15 Brazilian capitals, it surveys more than 300,000 prices of products, services, and other primary data monthly. For 70 years, its mission has been to contribute to Brazil's economic and social development. Among the statistics produced by FGV IBRE are, for example, price indices, surveys, and reference prices.

This research aims to improve the price confirmation process, essential to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of the information offered to internal customers, to produce indicators. Currently, the prolonged confirmation time can result in erroneous interpretations of the data presented, motivating the search for more efficient methods.

The study uses daily data sets that include information such as price date, input, type of commercialization, type of establishment and geographic region. To improve data quality, statistical quality control methods are being evaluated, integrated with statistical process control. The proposal focuses on standardizing and anticipating price confirmations, aiming to reduce the time spent on individual analysis of each item.

Initially, methods such as the X-R Control Chart were explored, using both the average and median of prices collected daily. However, significant limitations were observed in these methods, which led to the investigation of new approaches and alternative techniques.

The expected results include the validation of more effective methods compared to the current ones, the evaluation of false positives and sectoral analysis by experts. Continuous monitoring of implemented changes aims to constantly improve the price collection process and ensure the quality of information available to users.

This study seeks not only to optimize operational efficiency in price confirmation, but also to increase the precision and reliability of calculated results, thus contributing to the improvement of economic decisions in both the public and private sectors.

This highlights the importance of the work and the institution's ongoing concern, through ongoing efforts to improve methods of collecting and analyzing price data.
