Abstract
The Hungarian Statistical Service was born in the 19th century. In 1825 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences set the goal of developing Statistics in Hungary, the Committee on Statistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was established in 1860. After a previous initiative (1948) the Hungarian Royal Statistical Office was established in 1871. The establishment of the Hungarian Statistical Association - after several initiatives - was announced in 1922. The development processes mostly progressed in parallel, but they were not exempt from the Hungarian political, economic and social processes. All this is also true for the role of Women in Statistics in Hungary. According to a report in 1884, 135 people worked for the Hungarian Statistical Office, but there were no Women in Statistics among them. The number of women among Statisticians has been increased very slowly (following the European trends). Nowadays, the proportion of women in Official Statistics as well as in the Hungarian Statistical Association ranges between 70-80 percent. The aim of the presentation is twofold, on the one hand, to commemorate the centenary of the Hungarian Statistical Association, on the other hand, to present the role of Women in Statistics in Hungary.
