Abstract
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics is aware of its role of enlarging and enhancing knowledge. This is one of the strategic objectives of its Strategic Map. For that purpose, it counts on the presence of a School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) in its structure. Besides that, its Dissemination Department does not only disseminate information, but also contributes to the promotion and sensitization of knowledge towards large society, school teachers and students. The Capacity-Building Department (part of ENCE) offers specific courses for audiences typically considered as targets of statistical literacy projects. The Dissemination Department has a huge project with schools and an interesting initiative with youtube videos to explain themes and concepts usually used by the NSO. Additionally, ENCE has worked continuously to boost its extension projects, which include initiave of statistical literacy. Despite all those actions, IBGE, alike many NSOs, still lacks an institutional and systematic program to promote a statistical literacy program.
