Abstract
Statistics is one of the fundamental disciplines at the tertiary level, given that all dissertations and theses require qualitative and quantitative analysis. In this regard, students require statistical knowledge to achieve good results in their studies. In Zimbabwe, at the secondary school level, statistics is in the mathematics curriculum up to the General Certificate of Education Ordinary level. Recently, statistics is now an elective subject at the Ordinary and Advanced levels. The demand for statisticians and data scientists in the government and private sector has made statistics education key to development in third-world countries like Zimbabwe. It is, therefore, imperative to discuss the purpose of statistics education in Zimbabwe at the secondary and tertiary levels. This will help to identify challenges, lessons learned and gaps for future research.
